Does Xbox Game Pass work in Russia in 2026? How to buy it, change region and when you need a VPN

Microsoft hasn't sold Xbox Game Pass in Russia since 2022. How to subscribe in 2026: changing account region, codes and gift cards, payment, what works without a VPN on the console and when a VPN is needed on PC.

Xbox Game Pass hasn't been sold in Russia since March 2022: Microsoft stopped sales, the Russian store region is closed for purchases and Russian cards are declined. Yet the subscription itself works in Russia: games launch, online and cloud are available, and tens of thousands of players get Game Pass through other regions. Here's how to do it in 2026, what it costs, and where in this setup a VPN is needed and where it only gets in the way.

Quick fix. To change region and buy on Microsoft's site, turn on Surok with a European exit. On the console no VPN is needed, and for online play on PC Surok doesn't hurt ping: Russian servers go direct. Three days free, then from 220 ₽ a month.

What exactly is closed in Russia

  • Buying and renewing Game Pass in the Russian account region.
  • Paying with Russian cards in the Microsoft Store.
  • Xbox Cloud Gaming in the Russian region.
  • New consoles aren't officially shipped, but grey imports are in every shop.

What works: account login, Xbox Live and multiplayer, games already bought, a subscription set up in another region.

How to get Game Pass from Russia

Step 1. Pick a region. The most popular: Turkey, Argentina, India, Nigeria, Brazil, the US. Prices were levelled in 2026: Ultimate is about $23 a month and PC Game Pass about $14, with little difference between regions, so choose where paying is easiest. It's better to create a new account than to change the region of your main one: Microsoft allows a region change once every three months, and the remaining balance is lost on the move.

Step 2. Pay. Three routes:

  1. A subscription code or gift card for the chosen region from a trusted seller, paid via Russia's SBP. Redeemed at redeem.microsoft.com or on the console.
  2. A foreign card, including virtual ones, directly in the Microsoft Store.
  3. An intermediary who sets up the subscription on your account for roubles.

Keys from dubious marketplaces risk revocation: Microsoft cancels codes bought with stolen cards, along with the subscription.

Step 3. Activate. On the console sign in and enter the code under "Redeem code". On PC through the Xbox app or the website.

Where a VPN is needed

  • Changing region and buying on the site. From a Russian address the Microsoft Store limits purchases and shows Russian prices. With a European address the region page and payment go through without questions.
  • Creating an account in another region. Do it with a VPN on, ideally the same country or at least Europe.
  • Games with region checks. Some Game Pass games on PC check the country at launch and refuse a Russian address. Turn the VPN on before launching; it can be turned off afterwards.
  • Cloud gaming. Xbox Cloud Gaming is available in the account's region but sometimes refuses a Russian address. A VPN opens access but adds latency; playing shooters via the cloud from Russia is hard either way.

Where a VPN isn't needed and even hurts

  • On the console. Online, updates and downloads work without a VPN. Don't put a VPN on the router for the Xbox: ping goes up, benefit is zero.
  • In PC multiplayer. Most game servers connect without a VPN. If a VPN is on system-wide, ping to Russian servers rises. Surok sends Russian addresses direct, so ping in games with Russian servers doesn't change, while foreign servers connect through Europe.

If a Game Pass game on PC won't launch, see VPN for gaming, which covers common launcher errors.

What it costs in practice

Game Pass Ultimate via codes costs roughly the subscription price plus a 10–15% seller fee. A separate expense if PC Game Pass games need a VPN: Surok is 220 ₽ a month for one device or 2,070 ₽ a year, unlimited traffic.

FAQ

Does Game Pass work in Russia? Yes, if the subscription was set up in another region.

Can I change the region of my main account? Yes, once every three months; the remaining balance is lost. A second account is simpler.

Which regions are cheapest? In 2026 the difference is small; choose by ease of payment: Turkey, Argentina, India.

In short

Xbox Game Pass in Russia is set up through an account in another region plus codes or a foreign card. A VPN is needed for region changes and purchases on the site, not on the console. For PC turn on Surok: the Microsoft Store opens and game ping doesn't change. Three days free.
