VPN not working over Wi-Fi: why it works on mobile data but not at home

The VPN works on mobile data but won't connect or keeps dropping on home or office Wi-Fi. Causes from the router and ISP to network settings, and what to do.

Quick fix. Different ISPs cut different protocols; you need a VPN with several connection methods. Get Surok in Telegram: 3 days free.

  1. Your home ISP blocks the protocol — switch protocol or profile; in Surok try "Europe · Wi-Fi", then "Europe · auto".
  2. The router interferes — reboot it, turn off parental controls and threat filtering, and don't stack a phone VPN on top of a router VPN.
  3. Office or guest Wi-Fi — often only websites are allowed; you need a profile disguised as HTTPS. See VPN in cafés and airports.
  4. Wi-Fi proxy and DNS settings — proxy off, DNS automatic, and on iPhone turn off Limit IP Address Tracking.
  5. IPv6 — try disabling it on the router.
  6. Device limit reached — check your devices in the account.

To confirm it's the Wi-Fi: tether from your phone. If it works that way, the problem is the home network or ISP.
