VPN for Telegram: when photos won't load, calls don't work or channels won't open

Messages arrive, but photos and videos hang with a spinner. Or calls drop. Or the app takes five minutes to connect. These are signs of throttling and targeted blocking of Telegram.
What's happening
Telegram lives on several groups of servers, and different carriers cut different parts: media, calls, the connection as a whole. That's why "everything works" for your neighbour but not for you.
How a VPN helps
Through the tunnel Telegram connects to its servers from Europe, where nobody cuts anything. Media loads at once, calls go through, channels open.
Setup
The simplest path: the Surok app and the button. The whole phone goes through the tunnel, Telegram included. Russian sites still open directly thanks to built-in rules, so banks and Gosuslugi keep working.
If you need the VPN only for Telegram, Telegram itself has a proxy setting: "Settings → Data and Storage → Proxy". But Telegram's built-in proxies get caught fastest, while Surok's tunnel looks like an ordinary site and lives longer.
Calls
Calls need a stable channel. Pick a specific country rather than "Europe · auto": the automatic mode may switch the exit mid-conversation. The exits closest to Russia are Estonia and Poland.
Telegram on a computer
The Windows and Mac apps wrap the whole computer, desktop Telegram too. The browser extension won't help here: it protects only the browser.
If it didn't help
Check on the IP page that the address changed. If it did but Telegram still hangs, reconnect it: close the app completely and open it again, it reconnects through the tunnel.
