VPN for Mac: Surok's app and what it asks of the system
Installing Surok VPN on macOS: the DMG, allowing the system extension, connecting from the menu bar, auto-updates and why the app appears as a "VPN profile" in settings.
On Mac Surok has its own app, built the way Apple asks VPNs to be built: through a system extension and a profile in network settings. No root scripts, no manual route editing.
Installation
Download the DMG, open it and drag Surok into "Applications". The app is signed and notarised by Apple, there will be no "unidentified developer" warnings.
First launch
On the first connection macOS asks you to allow the Surok VPN system extension. Press "Open Settings", flip the switch and return to the app. This is done once. A Surok VPN profile appears in "Settings → VPN", you can toggle it from there too.
How to use it
Sign in by email, via Telegram or with the "Activate the app" button from your account. Then there's a button, a list of exits and a session timer. In the menu bar there's a Surok icon with a menu: connect, disconnect, change server.
The "More" tab has two useful checkboxes: launch at login and connect right at launch.
Updates
The app checks the version at launch and every three hours, downloads the new one and restarts itself. No need to open the installer again.
What the system shows
A VPN profile in settings, the system extension in the "Extensions" section and a virtual utun interface. All of the Mac's traffic goes through the tunnel, DNS too.
If it won't connect
- Check that the extension is enabled in "Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions".
- Change the server.
- Log for support: the "More" tab.
