Telegram not working even with a VPN: causes and fixes

The VPN is on but Telegram hangs on Connecting, won't send messages or load media. Causes — from an old proxy in settings to a blocked protocol — and a simple way to do without a VPN.

Quick fix. A Surok subscription includes a personal Telegram proxy: the messenger works on its own, with the VPN off. Get it in the Telegram bot: 3 days free.

  1. An old proxy is still set in Telegram — the most common cause. Settings → Data and Storage → Proxy: turn it off or delete dead ones.
  2. The VPN is on but carries no traffic. Check our IP page.
  3. Telegram bypasses the VPN. On desktop use TUN mode; on a phone check split tunnelling.
  4. The app kept an old connection. Fully close and reopen it.
  5. Overloaded server. Text works, media doesn't — see Telegram won't load photos and videos.
  6. Only calls fail. Calls need UDP — see Telegram calls.
  7. Mobile data with allow-lists. Neither a VPN nor a proxy connects without a CDN-based profile.
  8. Telegram outage. Wait.

A proxy lives inside Telegram: tap a link once and the messenger stays online while other apps go as usual. Calls don't go through a proxy.
