Is Reddit banned in Russia? No, and here's why it sometimes won't load (2026)

Reddit isn't blocked in Russia, but there were two attempts: a one-day block in 2015 and a lawsuit in 2023. What access looks like now, why the site sometimes won't load, what happens to Reddit Premium, and when you need a VPN.

Short answer: Reddit is not blocked in Russia. The site and the app open without a VPN on every provider, and it isn't in the registry of banned sites. But Reddit does have a history with Roskomnadzor, and part of the content inside posts genuinely won't load without a workaround. Let's go through it.

If something won't open. Images, videos and links in Reddit posts often point to services blocked in Russia: Imgur, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter. Through Surok all of it opens, while Russian sites keep working directly. The first three days are free.

Reddit's history with Roskomnadzor

August 2015. At the request of the drug control agency, Roskomnadzor added a single Reddit page about growing banned plants to the registry. Because the site ran on HTTPS, providers couldn't block one page and cut off all of Reddit. A day later Reddit restricted access to that page from Russia and the block was lifted. That's the only time Reddit didn't work in Russia.

April 2023. A military prosecutor filed a lawsuit demanding that Reddit be blocked entirely for publishing information banned in Russia. In May the prosecutor withdrew the suit and the case was closed.

2024–2026. No new attempts. Reddit gets fined for not removing content, like most foreign platforms, but a block hasn't been on the table.

Why Reddit sometimes won't open

If the site doesn't load, the cause is almost never a block:

  1. Content inside posts. Reddit hosts its own images on its own servers, but a huge share of links go to Imgur, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter and Discord. Those services are blocked or throttled in Russia, so the post opens but the image in it doesn't.
  2. Mobile data with whitelists. Some carriers in some regions allow only approved sites, and Reddit isn't among them. How that works is in internet whitelists.
  3. Reddit's own protection. When you arrive from suspicious addresses, including public proxies, Reddit shows "you've been blocked by network security". That's not Roskomnadzor, it's Reddit's anti-bot system.
  4. An outage on Reddit's side. Happens a few times a year and affects every country.

Reddit Premium and ads

Reddit Premium and coin purchases can't be paid for with Russian cards: Reddit, like most American companies, hasn't worked with Russian banks since 2022. Through a VPN with a foreign card the subscription goes through. Reddit Ads is closed to Russian companies.

Do you need a VPN for Reddit

For reading and commenting, no. You need a VPN if:

  • you want to see images and videos from blocked services inside posts;
  • you're on mobile data with whitelists;
  • Reddit shows "network security" on your address;
  • you need to pay for Premium with a foreign card.

Surok routes Russian sites directly, so you can keep the VPN on all the time. How that works is in VPN for Android and the guide for any device.

In short

Reddit is open in Russia; it was blocked once, for a day, in 2015. If something won't load, it's content from blocked services inside posts or your carrier's whitelist. A VPN solves those cases, and Surok gives three days free.
