Proxy for Telegram: MTProto, SOCKS5 or VPN — which to choose
Telegram's built-in proxies are free and take two taps to set up, but they have limits. Comparing MTProto, SOCKS5 and VPN on reliability, speed, calls and security.
Telegram supports proxies out of the box, and the web is full of free "tap to connect" links. It works reasonably well, but not always and not for everything.
MTProto proxy
Telegram's own protocol, built for bypassing blocks; connects via a tg://proxy?... link.
Pros: free, no extra app, traffic encrypted, modern Fake-TLS proxies look like HTTPS.
Cons: Telegram only; free proxies are overloaded and last days to weeks; calls don't work through MTProto; the owner sees your IP, and some proxies pin a "sponsored" channel.
SOCKS5 proxy
Pros: universal, other apps can use it too.
Cons: traffic to the proxy is not encrypted or disguised, so it's easy to spot and block. For bypassing blocks in Russia it's nearly useless today.
VPN
Pros: covers every app — Telegram, WhatsApp, YouTube, Instagram; carries calls if it supports UDP; modern protocols (VLESS Reality, XHTTP) look like a normal site; a good VPN has several servers and connection methods, so it doesn't just die.
Cons: a good VPN costs money and needs its own app.

What to choose
- Only Telegram text, occasionally — a free Fake-TLS MTProto proxy will do.
- Calls, stability and other apps — a VPN.
- SOCKS5 for bypassing blocks in Russia — not recommended.
For calls, read why Telegram and WhatsApp calls fail; for media, Telegram won't load photos and videos. Surok works on every device — see the download page.
