Figma remains the main tool for interface designers, and "does Figma work in Russia" gets asked every week. The short answer for autumn 2026: it works, but not for everyone and not always. Here's Figma's official policy, what changed in 2026, and when you can't do without a VPN.

Quick fix. If Figma won't open or keeps dropping the connection, turn on Surok: Figma goes through Europe while Russian sites and messengers stay direct. Three days free, then from 220 ₽ a month.

Figma's official position

Figma never left Russia entirely. Its policy, published in March 2022 and essentially unchanged, says:

  • accounts of companies under US, UK and EU sanctions, and of their employees, are frozen;
  • other Russian users can keep working, and the free plan is available;
  • no new paid subscriptions are sold to Russia, and Russian cards haven't been accepted since Visa and Mastercard suspended operations there.

In practice many corporate teams lost access in 2022–2024, while freelancers and small studios kept working on the free plan or with payment from abroad.

What changed in 2026

Since spring 2026 Figma's forum has collected dozens of reports from Russia: figma.com doesn't load on some ISPs without a VPN, while the official status page says all systems are operational. Figma staff replied that they couldn't discuss "network-level details" and pointed people to support. Independent checks showed a pattern typical of connection-level blocking rather than a service outage.

In our own check on 14 October 2026 from a server in Moscow, figma.com opened without a VPN. So access depends on the ISP and region: for some it all works, for others the site won't load, or loads but the editor keeps disconnecting.

When you need a VPN

  1. The site doesn't open at all. Try another ISP or mobile data. If it fails everywhere, a VPN solves it immediately.
  2. The editor keeps disconnecting. Figma holds a persistent connection to servers in the US; on an unstable route the file drops every few minutes. Through a European exit the route is steadier.
  3. Prototypes and fonts don't load. Some Figma resources come via CDNs that respond slowly from Russia.
  4. Payment. The billing page and plan changes are sometimes unavailable from a Russian address.

Turn the VPN on and reopen the file: Figma picks up the connection without a reload.

How to pay for Figma from Russia

Russian cards are declined. Working options: a foreign bank card, including virtual ones, or intermediaries who pay the subscription for roubles with a fee. With an intermediary, remember that Figma may freeze an account it considers to belong to a sanctioned company. Freelancers' personal accounts usually aren't affected.

Using Figma through a VPN while staying in Russia doesn't formally break Russian law (see is VPN banned in Russia), but for Figma the sanctions question is decided by the account owner, not the IP.

Which VPN suits Figma work

Figma is latency-sensitive: above 200 ms ping, teammates' cursors stutter and large files open slowly. So you want an exit in Europe rather than Asia or America, and a protocol without heavy overhead. Surok has exits in Germany, the Netherlands and Poland with 40–70 ms ping from Moscow, and Russian sites bypass the VPN, so Yandex, banks and Telegram don't notice the changed address. Check latency on the IP page.

On a PC the most convenient option is the Surok browser extension: only the browser with Figma goes through it, the rest of the system stays as is.

Alternatives

If Figma is closed to your team under sanctions, the market offers Pixso, Lunacy by Icons8 and Russian editors. But none of them imports working Figma files fully, so most studios keep Figma through a VPN and foreign payment.

FAQ

Is Figma banned in Russia? Officially no, it's not in Roskomnadzor's registry. Since spring 2026 the site doesn't open on some ISPs without a VPN.

Does the free plan work? Yes, if the account hasn't been frozen under sanctions.

Can I pay with a Russian card? No. You need a foreign card or an intermediary.

Will my files be deleted? A sanctions freeze closes access rather than deleting files. Export in advance anyway.

In short

Figma works in Russia in 2026, but on some ISPs only through a VPN, and payment only with a foreign card. Turn on Surok, reopen the file, and the editor stops disconnecting. Three days free.
