Does Canva work in Russia in 2026? How to open it, sign up and pay for Pro with a VPN
Canva closed access for Russia in June 2022. How to open Canva in 2026 through a VPN, why sign-up fails, how to pay for Canva Pro without a Russian card and what to use instead if you don't want the hassle.
Canva, the most popular online editor for presentations, posts and covers, has been unavailable in Russia since 2022: the site refuses Russian addresses and the apps are gone from the Russian App Store and Google Play. Yet the millions of templates and the familiar interface haven't gone anywhere, and in 2026 Russians keep working in Canva through a VPN. Here's how to do it without losing your account, and how to pay for Pro.
Quick fix. Turn on Surok and Canva opens on your phone and computer from a European address. Three days free, then from 220 ₽ a month.
What exactly Canva closed
In March 2022 Canva condemned the war and wound down its Russian operations, and from June 2022 it restricted login for Russian users. Since then:
- canva.com from a Russian IP shows a stub page or loads forever;
- the Canva apps vanished from Russian stores;
- Russian cards aren't accepted for Canva Pro and Teams;
- old accounts weren't deleted: they open through a VPN with all projects intact.
Canva isn't in Roskomnadzor's registry; this is the company's own decision. So zapret and other DPI bypasses won't help here. You need a foreign address.
How to open Canva with a VPN
- Turn on a VPN with a European exit. In Surok, "Europe · auto" works; for speed pick Germany or the Netherlands.
- Open canva.com. If you previously visited without a VPN and saw the stub, clear the site's cache or open it in incognito: Canva remembers you as "from Russia".
- Log into your old account by email or via Google. For a new account also use Google or Apple: Russian phone numbers don't work for verification.
- Keep the VPN on for the whole session. If it drops, Canva kicks you out of the editor; unsaved edits usually survive, but autosave is interrupted.
On phones: on Android install the Canva APK from a trusted source; on iPhone you need an Apple ID from another country, as described in App Store not working. The easiest route is the website in a browser with the VPN on.
How to pay for Canva Pro from Russia
Canva Pro costs about $15 a month or $120 a year. From Russia people pay:
- with a foreign bank card, including virtual ones;
- through intermediaries who take roubles via SBP and pay the subscription with a 10–20% fee;
- with a gift subscription from someone abroad.
With an intermediary, don't hand over your account: an invitation to a team where the intermediary pays is enough. Free Canva through a VPN works without any limits except premium templates.
Which VPN suits Canva
Canva is heavy: the editor loads megabytes of fonts and images, and video export runs through servers in the US and Europe. So free VPNs with traffic caps are a poor fit: one video export eats the cap. You need a fast exit with no traffic limit. Surok has unlimited traffic, and Russian sites go direct, so Yandex Disk, Telegram and banks don't notice the VPN.
On a PC the Surok browser extension is convenient: only the browser with Canva goes through the VPN. Check your address on the IP page.
Alternatives if you don't want a VPN
Russian services Supa and Flyvi cover the basics: social posts, stories, simple presentations. Among foreign ones, Adobe Express (with payment caveats) and Pixso open without a VPN. But Canva's template library is still bigger, so most people keep using it through a VPN.
FAQ
Is Canva banned in Russia? Not by Roskomnadzor. Canva itself closed access for Russian addresses from June 2022.
Is my old account still there? Yes, through a VPN it opens with all projects.
Can I pay with a Russian card? No. You need a foreign card or an intermediary.
Why doesn't Canva open even with a VPN? Usually the cache: open the site in incognito or clear cookies for canva.com. If that fails, confirm on the IP page that the address is foreign.
In short
Canva in Russia in 2026 works only through a VPN with a foreign address, and Pro is paid only with a foreign card or via an intermediary. Turn on Surok, open canva.com in incognito and log in. Three days free.
