Is YouTube banned in Russia in 2026? What happened and how to watch it

The timeline from the 2024 "slowdown" to the domain vanishing from the national DNS in February 2026, what Roskomnadzor calls a block and what it doesn't, and what you actually need today to open YouTube in Russia.

Short answer: since February 2026 YouTube doesn't work in Russia without a VPN on the vast majority of providers. Formally Roskomnadzor has never announced a block, but technically that's exactly what it is. Below is the timeline, why "slowdown" and "block" ended up being the same thing, and what to do.

Quick fix. YouTube opens through any working VPN with traffic masking. With Surok video loads in 1080p and 4K, Russian sites open without disconnecting, and the first three days are free. On a computer the YouTube Accelerator, a single button in the browser, is enough.

Timeline: how the "slowdown" became a block

Summer 2024. Video starts loading slower, first on home internet, then on mobile. Roskomnadzor blames "degradation of Google's equipment" and denies any involvement. Lawmakers talk about the slowdown as leverage against Google for not complying with Russian law.

December 2024. Speed is cut so hard that watching video without workarounds becomes practically impossible. It's no longer "laggy", it's "doesn't load".

10 February 2026. The youtube.com domain disappears from the National Domain Name System controlled by Roskomnadzor. On providers obliged to use that system, YouTube's address stops resolving at all. Telecom experts call this a full block. The same day Roskomnadzor officially confirms it is throttling Telegram, and several specialists link the two events: the equipment doesn't have the capacity to "slow down" everything at once.

May 2026. The Moscow City Court rules that restricting access to YouTube in Russia is lawful. In parallel YouTube itself starts showing some Russian users on a VPN the message "this content is unavailable" and asking them to turn off protection: that is Google restricting by account region.

Autumn 2026. The site doesn't open without a VPN on almost every carrier. Individual providers let traffic through on individual days, but that can't be relied on.

Why Roskomnadzor doesn't call it a block

The official position hasn't changed since 2024: there are no restrictions, the problems come from Google no longer maintaining its servers in Russia. Legally the distinction matters: a block means the site is added to the registry and providers receive an order. That never happened with YouTube. In practice it makes no difference to the user: without a workaround video doesn't open.

How to check it's the block and not your internet

  • Open youtube.com without a VPN. If the page doesn't load at all or hangs on "establishing connection", it's a block at the DNS or traffic level.
  • Turn on a VPN and refresh. If it opened, your internet is fine.
  • If it doesn't open with the VPN either, the problem is the VPN itself. Seven typical cases are covered in YouTube not working even with a VPN.

What you need for YouTube to work

Phone. The Surok app for Android or the setup for iPhone. Connect, and YouTube in the app and in the browser runs at full speed.

Computer. The YouTube Accelerator: an extension for Chrome and Yandex Browser that routes only YouTube, with every other site going direct. Or the Windows app if you need a VPN for everything.

TV. On Android TV you install the same app as on a phone. For Samsung, LG and Apple TV you need a VPN on the router or tethering from a phone: details in how to watch YouTube on a TV in Russia.

VPN requirements got stricter in 2026: OpenVPN, IKEv2 and plain WireGuard are recognised and cut. You need a protocol masked as ordinary HTTPS, which for Surok is VLESS with Reality and XHTTP. A selection checklist is in VPN for YouTube.

Can you watch YouTube without a VPN

Sometimes. Local anti-throttling tools like Zapret and GoodbyeDPI worked during the "slowdown" phase, but after the domain vanished from DNS they need extra configuration and don't work on every carrier. What's still alive is covered in how to watch YouTube without a VPN.

Yes. YouTube itself isn't in the registry of banned sites, using a VPN in Russia isn't prohibited, only advertising circumvention tools is. More in is VPN banned in Russia.

In short

Since February 2026 YouTube in Russia doesn't work without a VPN, even though formally nobody calls it a block. To watch you need a VPN with traffic masking, and on a computer an extension is enough. Surok gives three days free to test it on your own connection.
