VPN for a tablet in Russia (2026): iPad, Android tablets, Huawei MatePad and Windows
How to put a VPN on a tablet in Russia: on an iPad with a Russian Apple ID, on Android tablets from Samsung, Xiaomi and Lenovo, on a Huawei without Google and on Windows tablets. Which VPN doesn't drop on Wi-Fi and mobile data, what to do with a kids' tablet and what a multi-device plan costs.
In 2026 a tablet is first of all a screen for YouTube, films and kids' cartoons, and none of that opens in Russia without a VPN any more. The blocks on a tablet are the same as on a phone, but three differences stop "just install a VPN" from always working: an iPad with a Russian Apple ID has no working VPN client at all, tablets without a SIM depend on the home router, and kids' tablets are wrapped in parental controls. Here's every type in turn.
Quick fix. Surok works on any tablet: on Android and Windows through our app, on iPad through Happ. One plan for three devices covers a phone, a tablet and a laptop. Three days free, then from $2.99 a month.
Which VPN a tablet needs
There's one requirement, and it doesn't depend on the brand: a protocol the carriers don't cut. WireGuard, OpenVPN and IKEv2 have been blocked by signature in Russia since 2024; the built-in VPN settings in iPadOS and Android work only with those and are therefore useless. You need a client on VLESS with Reality or XHTTP; more in which VPN protocol is best. After that, everything comes down to whether such a client can be installed on your tablet.
iPad
The iPad is the hardest case. In spring 2026 Happ, Streisand, V2Box and v2RayTun vanished from the Russian App Store: every client that speaks modern protocols. With a Russian Apple ID you can't install them, and the "VPNs" left in the store run on old protocols and don't connect in Russia.
There's one way out: a second Apple ID with a different country. It's free, takes ten minutes, needs no card, and your Russian account stays put: you simply sign into the App Store (not iCloud) with the second account. The steps are in App Store not working, and the choice of client in free VPN for iPhone: everything written about the iPhone applies one-to-one to the iPad.
Then: install Happ, tap "Connect" in the Surok bot and pick iPhone/iPad; the subscription is added with one button. The VPN on an iPad is system-wide: it covers Safari, the YouTube app and YouTube Kids.
Android tablets: Samsung, Xiaomi, Lenovo, Honor
Here it's the same as on a phone. Download the APK from the download page, allow the install, sign in via Telegram or email, tap "Connect". If Telegram isn't on the tablet, sign in by email.
The only concern is battery saving, which is set even more aggressively on tablets than on phones: a tablet lies around for hours with the screen off, and the system unloads the VPN. On Samsung add the app to "Never sleeping apps" and enable "Always-on VPN" (details in VPN for Samsung); on Xiaomi and Redmi Pad enable "Autostart" and "No restrictions" in battery; on Lenovo and Honor lift the background limits in the app's settings. What to do if the VPN still drops: VPN disconnects by itself.
Huawei MatePad without Google
A MatePad has no Google Play, but it doesn't need it: the Surok APK installs directly and doesn't require Google services. AppGallery has no VPNs on modern protocols. One nuance: EMUI and HarmonyOS unload background apps especially eagerly, so in the battery settings for the VPN you need "Manage manually" with all three toggles on. Details in VPN for Huawei.
Windows tablets and convertibles
A Surface and other Windows tablets are ordinary computers. Install the Surok app for Windows, or use the browser extension if you only need the VPN for websites. The app also runs on Windows on ARM tablets.
A tablet without a SIM: Wi-Fi and the router
If the tablet has no cellular modem, it always sits on someone else's network: home Wi-Fi, a café, a phone's hotspot. The rules:
- Home Wi-Fi. A VPN on the tablet itself works as usual. The alternative for a home with several devices is a VPN on the router; then nothing needs installing on the tablet. See VPN on a router.
- Phone hotspot. A VPN turned on in the phone doesn't extend to the Wi-Fi it shares: the tablet goes online directly through the carrier. Put the VPN on the tablet. More in VPN through a phone.
- A tablet with a SIM. Works like a phone, including during mobile-internet whitelists: Surok gets through them; details in how to bypass whitelists.
A kids' tablet
Three things parents should know. First: YouTube Kids is blocked just like regular YouTube; without a VPN the cartoons won't load. Second: if Google Family Link is on the tablet, the child can't install an APK or a VPN alone; it needs approval from the parent's phone, and then the app has to be allowed to run in Family Link. Third: the Surok app has nothing in it except a connect button, no content and no ads, so it's safe to leave on a child's tablet. Enable "Always-on VPN" so the child can't switch it off by accident.
What it costs
A tablet counts as a separate device. Surok's one-device plan is from 220 ₽ a month (2,070 ₽ a year), and three devices cost 380 ₽ a month: a phone, a tablet and a laptop. The first three days are free; you can pay with a Mir card, SBP, a foreign card or crypto.
FAQ
Do I need a separate VPN for a tablet? No, the same subscription as on the phone, if the plan allows several devices.
Which VPN can I put on an iPad without changing the Apple ID? No clients on modern protocols are left in the Russian App Store. A second Apple ID takes ten minutes and is free.
Is the tablet slow with a VPN? Pick the nearest exit ("Europe · auto") and check the speed on Wi-Fi without the VPN: more often it's the router that's slow.
Does a VPN work on a tablet during whitelists? On a tablet with a SIM, Surok works. There are no whitelists on Wi-Fi.
Can I watch YouTube on a tablet without a VPN? Not since February 2026: the YouTube domain was removed from Russia's DNS. More in is YouTube banned in Russia.
In short
On an Android, Huawei or Windows tablet Surok installs in a minute; an iPad needs an Apple ID from another country and Happ. Lift the battery limits so the VPN isn't unloaded, and connect a SIM-less tablet through its own VPN or the router, not a phone hotspot. Three days free, three devices for 380 ₽ a month.
