Telegram won't load photos and videos: causes and fixes

Messages arrive but Telegram photos and videos keep spinning or never open. Seven causes, from phone storage to carrier restrictions, and what to do about each.

Text arrives instantly, but photos stay blurry, videos spin and voice messages won't play. There are several causes; let's go from simple to complex.

1. Phone storage is full

Fix: Settings → Data and Storage → Storage Usage. Clear the cache and set "keep media" to a week. Chats are not deleted.

2. Auto-download is off

Fix: Settings → Data and Storage → Automatic media download — enable it for the networks you use.

3. Battery or data saver

Saver modes on Android and iPhone limit background downloads. Fix: exclude Telegram from them.

4. Telegram outage

Sometimes Telegram's own servers fail in a region. Fix: check an outage monitor; if it's global, wait.

5. Weak or congested connection

Fix: run a speedtest. Under 1–2 Mbps, large videos will be slow regardless of settings.

6. Carrier restrictions

In Russia, on some carriers and in some regions Telegram media loads much slower than text, and on whitelist-only networks the messenger may work intermittently. Sign: fine on Wi-Fi, stuck on mobile data while other sites load. Fix: a VPN with disguise (VLESS Reality, XHTTP) and fallback connection methods such as CDN.

7. A dead built-in proxy

Many people once enabled a free MTProto proxy and forgot about it. When it dies, Telegram hangs on "Connecting…" or loads media slowly. Fix: Settings → Data and Storage → Proxy — turn off dead proxies. See proxy for Telegram: MTProto, SOCKS5 or VPN.

How to check the fix

Open a channel with large videos and play one. If it starts in seconds with the VPN and hangs without it, it was the network. Surok apps are on the download page, the first days are free.
