Is Pinterest banned in Russia? Status in 2026, fines and why it won't load
Pinterest isn't on Russia's blocklist, yet on some carriers it loads every other time, and 2026 fines have passed 27 million roubles. What's happening to Pinterest in Russia, why pins and videos won't load, whether it works on mobile data and when you need a VPN.
The short answer as of 26 October 2026: Pinterest is not banned in Russia. The site and the app open without a VPN on most providers, it isn't in Roskomnadzor's registry, and the app is still listed in the App Store and Google Play. But "not banned" and "working normally" aren't the same thing in 2026: on some carriers pins take half a minute to load, videos won't start, and courts hand Pinterest one fine after another. Here's what's going on and what to do about it.
Quick fix. If Pinterest opens but images and videos hang, turn on Surok: traffic goes through Europe, around the carrier's filters, and the feed loads in full. Three days free, then from $2.99 a month.
Where Pinterest stands in Russia in autumn 2026
Pinterest didn't leave Russia the way Tinder or Notion did, and it wasn't blocked like Instagram or Snapchat. The company keeps serving Russian users: feeds and search work, accounts register with a Russian number and email, sign-in via Google and Apple works. The one thing missing is an official ad platform for Russian businesses: Pinterest Ads isn't available in Russia.
What there is, though, is regulatory pressure. Since 2024 Moscow courts have been fining Pinterest for "failing to remove prohibited information", and in 2026 the fines got bigger and more frequent:
| Date | Amount | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| 27 April 2026 | 3.5 million ₽ | failure to remove prohibited content (Twitch got the same amount that day) |
| 29 June 2026 | 3.5 million ₽ | repeat offence under the same article |
| early September 2026 | 10.8 million ₽ | 7 million for LGBT content and 3.8 million for videos of minors in dangerous activities |
| 7 October 2026 | 10 million ₽ | repeat offence |
Discord and Viber walked exactly this staircase: fines first, then "throttling", then a block. There's no guarantee Pinterest will follow, but it can't be ruled out either.
Why Pinterest won't load if it isn't blocked
"Pinterest isn't working" complaints come in waves in 2026, most often for three reasons.
Images live in foreign clouds. The pinterest.com site itself opens, but pins are served from pinimg.com domains through foreign content delivery networks. When Roskomnadzor blocks whole subnets of cloud providers to reach some other site, the servers with Pinterest images get caught too. On some carriers that looks like endless loading, on others like grey squares instead of pins.
Mobile data with whitelists. In regions where mobile internet shutdowns leave access only to whitelisted sites, Pinterest doesn't work: it isn't on the list. On Wi-Fi everything opens. More in internet whitelists.
Outages at Pinterest itself. They happen worldwide and show up on Downdetector in several countries at once. If complaints are coming from the US and Europe, a VPN won't help; you have to wait.
To tell which case is yours, open Pinterest over Wi-Fi, then over mobile data, then through a VPN. If everything loads instantly through the VPN, the carrier's filters are to blame.
What a VPN does for Pinterest
- Full loading of pins and videos. Traffic goes through a foreign server, and subnet blocks along the way don't interfere.
- Works on mobile data. Surok gets through on whitelists; details in how to bypass whitelists.
- A different feed. Pinterest picks recommendations partly by country. With a European or US exit you'll see more pins in English and fewer Russian marketplaces. The interface language doesn't change; it's set in account settings.
- Access to features closed to Russia. Some Pinterest tools, such as shopping straight from a pin, work only in certain countries and detect them by address.
What a VPN won't give you: an ad account. Pinterest Ads requires an account country and payment details, and Russian ones don't pass.
How to turn on a VPN for Pinterest
- Install Surok: an app on Android and Windows, Happ on iPhone, and in a desktop browser the extension is enough.
- Pick "Europe · auto" and tap "Connect".
- Fully close the Pinterest app and open it again so it stops pulling images over old connections.
- If videos in pins still won't play, update the Pinterest app to the latest version and check the IP page: the address should be foreign.
One device is enough for Pinterest, but if you browse it from both a phone and a laptop, Surok has a three-device plan for 380 ₽ a month.
What happens if Pinterest gets blocked
The scenario is familiar from other services: "throttling" one fine day, then an entry in the registry. The app stays on your phone, the account stays too; it just won't load anything without a VPN. Instagram and Facebook have lived like that for four years now; we have separate articles on them: Instagram not working with VPN and Facebook in Russia. Save your boards in advance: account settings have a "Request your data" option, and Pinterest emails you an archive of pins.
FAQ
Is Pinterest banned in Russia? No. As of 26 October 2026 it isn't in the registry of prohibited sites and opens without a VPN on most carriers.
Why won't Pinterest load images? Most often because of subnet blocks on the foreign clouds that serve pins, or because of whitelists on mobile data. A VPN solves both.
Do I need a VPN to sign up for Pinterest? No. Registration with a Russian number and email works, as does sign-in via Google or Apple.
Can I run Pinterest ads from Russia? No. The ad platform isn't available for Russian accounts, and a VPN doesn't change that.
Does Pinterest work on mobile data during whitelists? Not without a VPN; it isn't whitelisted. With Surok it works.
In short
Pinterest isn't banned in Russia, but it loads every other time because of subnet blocks and whitelists, and the 2026 fines hint that the regulator has taken it seriously. If pins and videos hang, turn on Surok with a European exit: three days free, then from $2.99 a month, and Pinterest will open in full regardless of the carrier.
