Patreon, the creator-subscription platform, is blocked in Russia: since August 2022 Roskomnadzor has restricted access to patreon.com, and as of 14 October 2026 the site doesn't open from a Russian address, the connection is reset. That's a check from a server in Moscow, not hearsay. Here's what happened, how to open Patreon through a VPN, what works for payments and payouts, and what creators use instead.

Quick fix. Turn on Surok and Patreon opens in the browser and the app, while Russian sites go direct. Three days free, then from 220 ₽ a month.

Why Patreon is blocked

Access was restricted in early August 2022. The formal reason was content on individual creators' pages that the Prosecutor General's Office deemed false information about the military operation. As with other platforms, the whole domain was blocked rather than specific pages. The block has never been lifted.

Patreon itself had stopped working with Russian cards and payouts even earlier: after Visa and Mastercard left in March 2022, payments from Russian cards fail and payouts to Russian accounts are suspended. So even if the block were lifted, the service would remain half-functional for Russia.

How to open Patreon with a VPN

  1. Turn on a VPN with a foreign exit. In Surok, "Europe · auto" works.
  2. Open patreon.com in a browser or launch the app. On Android the app is on Google Play; it stayed in the Russian App Store longer than most, but an Apple ID from another country is safer.
  3. Log in. Old accounts weren't deleted; subscriptions and messages are intact.
  4. If pages load halfway or images don't appear, enable the VPN system-wide rather than only in the browser: Patreon pulls media from several domains, some of which are also blocked.

Confirm your address is foreign on the IP page. On a PC the Surok browser extension is handy: only the browser goes through the VPN.

How to pay for a creator from Russia

Russian cards fail. Options:

  • a foreign bank card, including virtual ones;
  • PayPal, if you have an account outside Russian jurisdiction;
  • intermediaries who pay the subscription for roubles with a fee.

With an intermediary, don't hand over your password: some services pay the subscription as a "gift" to your email.

What about creator payouts

Creators in Russia haven't received Patreon payouts since 2022: the service doesn't send money to Russian accounts and doesn't accept Russian banking details. A VPN doesn't help; this is about banks, not access. Creators either register with banking details from another country or move to platforms that work with Russia: Boosty, VK Donut, Telegram subscriptions. You can still collect Patreon subscribers if you have foreign banking details.

Using a VPN isn't banned and there are no fines for citizens, see is VPN banned in Russia. Responsibility for content lies with page authors, not readers.
