“Something went wrong” and other YouTube errors: what they mean and how to fix them
“Connection lost”, “An error occurred. Please try again”, endless loading and a black screen. Common YouTube errors on phone and computer and what to do about each.
YouTube has a dozen error messages and nearly all of them sound equally unhelpful. Each one has its own cause, though. Here are the most common ones.
"Connection lost" / "No connection"
Meaning: the app can't reach YouTube's servers even though you're online.
Fix: check other sites. If they work and YouTube doesn't, it's almost always throttling or blocking on the way to Google's servers — a VPN that disguises traffic helps. Also check the device date and time.
"An error occurred. Please try again" (playback ID)
Meaning: the player started loading but the stream broke off. Classic throttling: the page opened, the video from googlevideo.com didn't arrive.
Fix: drop to 480p and retry. If it still fails, turn on a VPN. If the error appears with the VPN on, switch server or connection profile.
Endless spinning
Meaning: video arrives slower than it plays.
Fix: open "Stats for nerds" (right-click the player). Connection Speed under 1000 Kbps on a normal connection means throttling — see why YouTube is slow.
Black screen
Meaning: usually hardware video acceleration or an outdated driver.
Fix: in Chrome turn off "Use hardware acceleration" and restart; try incognito to rule out extensions.
"Ad blockers are not allowed on YouTube"
Meaning: YouTube detected an ad blocker.
Fix: update the blocker extension or whitelist YouTube. More in YouTube without ads.
"This video isn't available in your country"
Meaning: geo-restricted by the uploader or removed on request.
Fix: a VPN exit in another country shows the video as a local would see it. Surok has exits in Germany, Poland, Estonia, Spain, Switzerland, the USA and Canada.
If nothing helps
Make sure your VPN actually carries the traffic: open our IP check. If it shows your real address with the VPN on, traffic is bypassing it. See how to check your VPN works.
