How to check that your VPN works and nothing leaks
Three one-minute checks: IP address, DNS and WebRTC. What should change after turning the VPN on, where to look and how Surok VPN closes leaks on phone, computer and in the browser.
A green button isn't a guarantee yet. Here's how to make sure your traffic really goes through the tunnel and nothing leaks past it.
Check 1. IP address
Open "What's my IP" without the VPN and remember the address. Turn Surok on and refresh the page. The address should change to a European one and the page should say "You're in Surok's burrow". If the address is the same, the VPN isn't working, whatever the button says.
Check 2. DNS
Even with the tunnel on, "what's this site's address" queries can go straight to your provider, and it sees where you go. In Surok's apps DNS always goes inside the tunnel, no need to check specially. In third-party apps look at the DNS setting: it should be a server inside the VPN, not "system".
Check 3. WebRTC in the browser
Browser video calls can reveal your real address bypassing the proxy. Our extension forbids that while it's on. If you use someone else's extension, check on any WebRTC test site that your local address isn't shown.
Check 4. Speed
Speed through a VPN is always a bit lower, but not several times lower. If it dropped a lot, change the exit: "Europe · auto" picks the fastest, but a specific country is sometimes better for a specific site.
What to do if something leaks
- Update the app: ours update themselves.
- Reconnect, sometimes the system doesn't apply the routes in time.
- Write to support and say which check failed.
