Does ChatGPT work in Russia? Access, the app and avoiding scams in 2026
ChatGPT doesn't work from Russian IP addresses — OpenAI itself restricts it. How to use ChatGPT from Russia, install the app and why cheap "shared subscriptions" are risky.
Interest in ChatGPT from Russia grew by half over the last month, and the questions are always the same.
Why it doesn't work
It isn't a Russian block: OpenAI doesn't support Russia, so the site and app refuse Russian IP addresses. You need an address in another country — DPI workarounds like zapret won't help, a VPN with a foreign exit will.
The website
Turn on a VPN with a European or US exit, open chatgpt.com and sign in. If it still says the country isn't supported, clear cookies for the site or use a private window.
The app
The official app isn't in the Russian App Store or Google Play. On iPhone you need an Apple ID from another country; on Android, Google Play from another country or an official source. Never install ChatGPT APKs from random sites — fakes are a common malware vector.
Paying for Plus
Russian cards aren't accepted. Legitimate options are a foreign bank card or paying through another country's App Store/Google Play. Beware cheap resold "subscriptions": often a shared account that gets banned, with strangers reading your chats.
Which VPN
One with exits where ChatGPT works (Europe, US), stable in Russia including mobile networks. Surok has exits in Germany, Poland, Estonia, Spain, Switzerland, the US and Canada — see the download page.
